Mikala is a mom of 2 boys who has been homeschooling for 3 years now. She is a former pastor, former business professional, and now a founder of a startup non-profit dedicated to homeschool education. She loves to invest in each child individually to discover and enhance their natural gifting. Through experience as a pastor, teacher, and speaker she has honed her public speaking skills, entrepreneurial skills, and love of math to provide a high-quality options to homeschooling families.

Public speaking is a valuable life, relational and business skill that can help you succeed both professionally and personally if you master it. There are many advantages to having good public speaking skills. Here are just a few:

Sadly, many people are uncomfortable with public speaking – so uncomfortable that numerous studies rank it as one of the top fears that people face. Not having good public speaking skills can cause you to miss out on the benefits of public speaking.
This course is an introduction to public speech communication which emphasizes the practical skill of public speaking, including techniques to lessen speaker anxiety, and the use of visual aids to enhance speaker presentations. Students will learn practical tips for engaging in casual communication as well as formal speech making. We will discuss using good and beautiful language as well as telling our own stories. The class will have some assigned homework.

Course Description: Students will explore what is happening around the world in a kid-friendly discussion-based class that breaks down the biggest news headlines of each week in a kid-friendly format. We will look into current headlines and investigate the historical, economic, political, and social context of the event. We will also look at major events that have happened in the world in the media that have shaped our culture and discuss the future possibilities of our media today.
This class will be largely discussion based in class. There may be some reading, investigating and projects at home. Homework will not be mandatory to participate.

Description:
I love math! I have a minor in mathematics as does my husband and my two boys love math! I am currently tutoring math outside of Thrive and truly love teaching our students!
This Algebra I course is a rigorous one-year course that will move at a fast pace
as we work toward understanding expressions, factoring and expanding expressions, the
quadratic equation, associated real-world problems, and expressions with multiple variables.
This course is designed to prepare your student for entering into subsequent higher-level math
courses such as Geometry and Algebra II.
Parents should preview the scope and sequence below to gain a better understanding of what it
entails. The beginning of the Algebra 1 course moves at a very quick pace as much of the
material in the first 2 chapters is review of Pre-Algebra. A review of decimals, fractions, and
percentages is not included, so parents should be sure the student is comfortable with those
topics before beginning the course.
Placement: The successful student in this class will be self-motivated with strong computational
and mathematical reasoning skills. Completion of Pre-Algebra with is mandatory.
